Moon Eater (Bakunawa)

2019 | 15 x 22 in | lithograph on Rives BFK

In Filipino mythology, the world began with 7 moons in the sky. The sea dragon Bakunawa saw the moonlight from the depths of the ocean. Enchanted, Bakunawa emerged from the water and ate the moons whole. Bathala the Creator, saw that only one moon remained and became angry. The dragon threatened to plunge the night into complete darkness as its mouth wrapped around the last moon. Bathala came to earth and fought the dragon back into the ocean. This is the indigenous legend behind lunar eclipses.
